Dakota the Foster Dog

This sweet girl is my foster dog, Dakota. She is one of the dogs from the Golden Retriever Rescue Resource (GRRR). Isn't she beautiful? The good news is that Dakota is being placed in her forever home today!

However, there are so many wonderful dogs in the rescue that need homes. Please visit GRRR's website if you are considering adopting a dog.

Toledo Pet Farm Photographer

I'm excited to share some good news! I recently signed on to be the contract photographer for Toledo Pet Farm! Toledo Pet Farm is a full-service pet facility located on a 4 acre lot, right off of Airport Highway (between Reynolds and Holland Sylvania Rd). Toledo Pet Farm is the largest facility of its kind in the area offering boarding, pet day-care, grooming, photography, training, and a vet clinic.

As the resident photographer for the Toledo Pet Farm, I will be offering customized portrait photography specializing in pets. I have a studio on site where I'll be shooting more traditional portraits or, when the weather permits, I will conduct sessions outside on the 4 acre campus. I'll be offering a number of exciting products and photography services . The photo sessions can include only people, only pets, or both. Update!

I know it has been a long time since I have posted here. I have had a lot of changes in my life since the last time I posted, so an update is long past due.

Last November I lost my day job. Since I became joyfully jobless I have had a lot of things going on in my personal life and as a result my portrait business was put on the back burner. After the holiday rush was over wedding planning started to take up a lot of my free time. With that came more life changes such as moving into our first home. Then, right in the midst of wedding planning, I experienced a great loss. My father passed away on March 23 2011, six weeks before our wedding. His unexpected death came to a great shock to our family and it was all we could do to get through the last weeks of wedding planning.

On May 7 2011, Aaron and I were married at Nazareth Hall in Grand Rapids, OH. The wedding was beautiful and we were lucky to have some good weather as the ceremony was outside.

Right after the wedding was over, Aaron and I headed to the Bahamas for our honeymoon. We lived like king and queen for a week while we relaxed at the beautiful Sandals resort at Emerald Bay. (Photos to come soon!)

Since getting back from the honeymoon I have been settling into married life. While still mourning my loss, I am slowly healing.

As for photography, I am officially open for business. I am accepting new clients and hoping to build up my portrait clientele. I have updated my website, LorenzenStudios.com. You will notice new portrait examples in the galleries. However, I have kept my low pricing in hopes to gain some business in this struggling economy.

In addition to working on my portrait photography I have been exploring encaustic painting and mixed media art. If you are interested in seeing this new art work check out my art blog, A Life In Progress.

Now that the site is updated and I'm open for business you can expect to see a lot more posts here. Check back often for new work!

Calendar Worthy

Exciting news! My photograph "Bridge Over Still Water" has been selected to be used as "January" for Sparta Calendars' 2011 Four Seasons calendar.

This is the first time I have been contacted by a company to buy the rights to print one of my photographs for a publication! It's a honor to know that one of my photographs is considered "calendar worthy".

Catching Up

Since I'm catching up on blogging I thought I'd share a few things that have happened since I've been MIA.

In July I had my photography in four different exhibitions. I was part of a group photography show at the new J&J Gallery in downtown Toledo. I had three photos in the Salon des Refuses exhibit at the Parkwood Gallery. I also had some work included in the grand opening of Zydorf Glass & Arts. And finally, I had a piece included in the Art's Gone Wild exhibit at the Toledo Museum of Art.

Also, my "Covered Bridge" photograph was one of the featured in this segment of Coffee with the Fords. You can see it in the background above Cynthia Ford. This is a great video promoting PRIZM, the Toledo Area Artist exhibit, and the Salon des Refuses exhibit.

Engaged!

Holy smokes, it's been a while! A lot has been going on so I've sort of set blogging aside for a while. But there have been a lot changes for me that I'd like to share.

First, and most importantly: WE'RE ENGAGED! Yup, Aaron popped the question during our trip to San Francisco last month. It was my first time to San Francisco and the trip was awesome! So much to see and do. Here is a quick snap of the ring I took on our trip.

Since we've been back things have been really busy. I've moved out of my apartment in Rossford into our new house in Holland, OH. Lately we've been working on getting settled in, unpacking, redecorating, and starting the wedding planning. I haven't even had much time to go through the photos from the trip! Once I have a chance I'll share them here.

As things move forward I'll keep you posted on the wedding plans, the new house, and new art adventures!

Art-A-Fair Closing

Tomorrow is the last day to view PRIZM's annual juried Art-A-Fair exhibition at the Toledo Lucas Library in downtown Toledo. Hours at the Toledo Library tomorrow will be 9:00 a.m - 5:30 p.m. Don't miss the show if you haven't seen it!

This was my first year participating in the show. I had four photographs on display. In addition, I submitted six mixed-media ATC's for the "Charmed and Be Charmed" miniatures creative challenge. My IR photograph, "Bridge Over Still Water" won the Claude Monet Award. And my mixed media ATC's won an award for the 2010 creative challenge.

If you are in the Toledo area and you haven't done so, please stop by and visit the exhibit before it closes. There are many great art works on display by PRIZM's talented members.

PRIZM's Art-A-Fair Exhibition 2010

Tomorrow marks the opening of PRIZM's Art-A-Fair exhibition at the Toledo Lucas County Library in downtown Toledo. This is my first year participating in this event. I will have four photographs on display in the gallery.

In addition, this year's creative challenge is called "Charmed And Be Charmed" and includes a display of miniatures. I have submitted six mixed-media ATC's for the challenge. Only very recently I have gotten back into working on mixed-media art and this was a fun opportunity for me to participate.

Tomorrow's opening reception is from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m at the main branch library and the event is free and open to the public. The exhibit will hang in the library's 2nd floor gallery through June 26th and is free and open to the public during the library's normal business hours.

I will post photographs of the exhibit after the opening. So check back!

Studio News

This post is to let my clients know that I have moved out of my studio space in downtown Toledo. Although there is a lot of great creative artists that have studio space in the Secor Building the space really wasn't working for me. Since the Lucas County Arena opened downtown parking has become a problem. The location has become rather inconvenient for my clients. So I have moved out of the space.

For now, I am without a proper studio space for my photography. I will continue to offer my services on location and in my clients' homes. Please contact me if you have any questions.

Although this was a hard decision to make, I do feel like I made the right one. Moving out of the space has helped me take stock of my creative activities and have inspired me to start painting and drawing again. I will also continue to concentrate on my fine art photography as always. Please be sure to check back to see my newest work.

New Photography Exhibit

I know it's been a while, but I wanted to let you know about my new photography exhibit. I have a selection of my work on display at The Huntington Bank in Perrysburg as part of PRIZM's Art-In-Public-Places program. Please see PRIZM's press release below.

PRIZM Creative Community is currently featuring a display of High Dynamic Range (HDR) and Infrared photography by member and local photographer Janelle Lorenzen at the Huntington Bank Building on Rt. 20 in Perrysburg, OH.

High Dynamic Range (HDR) imaging is a set of techniques allowing a greater dynamic range from lightest to darkest areas of an image than regularly possible with standard digital imaging techniques or photographic methods. The result is a hyper-real image with saturated colors and detailed shadows.

Infrared (IR) photography uses a filter on the front lens element to allow infrared light pass through to the image sensor while blocking nearly the entire visible light spectrum. Using this photo technique results in dreamlike images. These images are actually caused by foliage (such as tree leaves and grass) or other material reflecting light. This reflection is the same as when visible light is reflected from snow. Either HDR or IR photos can be enhanced with computer software designed for photo editing.

Photo artist Janelle Lorenzen received her BFA in Media Studies at The Columbus College of Art and Design in 2002. She owns Janelle Lorenzen Photography and focuses on portraits, fine art, and travel photography. Examples of her work are on display at the Huntington Building through April and on her website at www.LorenzenStudios.com.

PRIZM, along with local community partners, takes responsibility in providing local artists and community members opportunities to display and view creative expressions of life in Northwest Ohio. PRIZM provides numerous workshops in a variety of media and literary topics for members and guests. PRIZM’s goal is to enhance opportunities for all to experience creative expression.

'Tis the Secor

I'm excited to announce that Janelle Lorenzen Photography will be participating among the Secor Artists in the 3rd annual 'Tis the Secor holiday event in downtown Toledo. The event will be held on December 4th at 6:00 p.m - 12:00 a.m at The Secor Building at 425 Jefferson Toledo, OH.

For those of you who don't know, my photography studio is located on the 7th floor of The Secor Building. This will be my first time participating in 'Tis the Secor and I'm excited to open my studio and invite you to celebrate the holiday season with me.

This year’s festivities feature an exhibition of artwork from the Secor Artists and the Toledo Sculpture Guild in the Secor Gallery on the first floor, and artwork from the University of Toledo Sculpture Department in the Gallery on Six on the sixth floor. Additionally, the Secor Artists will be opening their studios to the public on the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th floors. Many works of art will be available for purchase.

Live entertainment will be provided through out the evening and refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to the public. Please join us for an evening of art, music, food, and holiday cheer.

Georgette's Exhibit

From now through the end of the month I will have one of my fine art photographs on display at Georgette's cafe in Maumee as part of PRIZM's Art In Public Places program. Visitors can view the work in the coffee shop during normal business hours of 6:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. weekdays, and Saturday’s from 8-4 p.m. This is a great little local cafe. Please stop by and check out what they have to offer!

PRIZM Perspectives Exhibit

From now through the end of the month I will have three photographs on display as part of the PRIZM Perspectives exhibit at the Maumee Library. The exhibit can be viewed in the gallery during normal business hours.

Represented is the works of fifteen artists and authors in many different Medias. On display in the hallway showcases will be poetry, jewelry, and sculpture, while the gallery will contain two dimensional pieces of art and literature.

PRIZM Creative Community

Wow, it's been almost a month since my last post. Geez, things have been busy around here! I've taken a trip, had several photo sessions, and have a few exhibitions that I've been in, and a few more that I'm getting ready for.

But what I really want to tell you about is PRIZM Creative Community. PRIZM Creative Community is a non-profit 501 (c. ) (3) created to inspire and encourage artistic expression in literary and visual arts from students to professional, and to bring to the communities the cultural enrichment of the arts. Opportunities include low cost education such as workshops, lectures, & demonstrations, juried & non-juried exhibitions, charitable public service opportunities, vendor discounts & resource library, studio time, & networking of artists and patrons.

I recently joined PRIZM and it has been a great experience. There are a lot of opportunities to network with other artists and participate in exhibitions around town. It's a great group for any artist that wants to give back to the community. Click here for more information about membership.

Open Studio Event

This Thursday is the last of the Art Walk events for the year presented by the Arts Commission of Greater Toledo. This event is a great opportunity to browse and purchase affordable local art, while getting to know the artists and galleries of the Arts Zone, the Warehouse District, and the surrounding area.

During the event my photography studio in the Secor Building will be open to the public. Stop by and you can view examples of my portrait and fine art photography. You can also roam through the studios of over 20 other artists located on the 5th, 6th, and 7th floors.

TAA and Salon Des Refuses exhibitions

This is just a reminder that the 91st Toledo Area Artist exhibition is closing soon. If you haven't already gone to the Toledo Museum of Art and viewed this exhibition, then put it on your list of things to do this weekend! This show includes 119 pieces of exceptional art created by artists in this region and selected by jury for this show.

Included in the TAA exhibition is one of my very own fine art photographs! This was the first year that I have applied for the show. One out of the three pieces that I submitted one was accepted. The accepted image, Yellow Boardwalk (shown below), is a favorite photo of mine. The digital image was taken at Wildwood Metro Park. The bold colors you see in the image come from the post processing in my digital darkroom.

The other two images that were not accepted for the TAA exhibit were accepted to the Salon Des Refuses show sponsored by PRIZM on display at The Parkwood Gallery. The first image, Frog Town (below), is a digital HDR photograph of downtown Toledo.

The second image, Bridge Over Still Water (below), is a digital infrared photograph taken at the Toledo Botanical Gardens. This image was also a part of my 2009 exhibition at Artomatic 419.

Both of the exhibitions will be on display through Sunday, August 23rd 2009. All of my work included in the shows is for sale. You may purchase the work at the exhibition, on LorenzenStudios.com, or by emailing me at Janelle@LorenzenStudios.com.

Molly and Denver - Sneak Peek!

Recently I had the opportunity to photograph my Aunt's two dogs in my studio in downtown Toledo. Molly is a year old black and white Border Collie and Collie mix. Denver is a six week old brown and white purebred Border Collie puppy.

It was a real challenge getting these two looking at the camera together. As difficult as it was, I had so much fun doing this session! Here are a few of the images that I have edited so far.

Funny, Silly Faces and Pets!

Today is the first time that I'm entering into an I ♥ Faces photo contest. I ♥ Faces is a photography site focused on photographing faces and their multitude of expressions. Each week they hold a themed photo contest for photographers of all experience levels to enter on their site. It's a great site that is inspiring and fun to browse. They also have giveaways and tutorials for photographers.

This week they have two categories for the themed photo contest. The first is "Funny, Silly Faces". My entry is a photo of one of my clients. I love this photo because this is actually how she smiles. She is quite a character.

The second category in this week's contest is "Pets". My entry is a photo of my brother's dog, Penny, that I took in my studio. I love her little sad eyes.

Fauxtobooth

So, a couple of weeks ago was my the grand opening of my new studio in downtown Toledo. It was a lot of fun and a ton of friends and family stopped out for the event. Thanks to everyone that could make it out!

And of course a Open Studio Party for a photography studio wouldn't be complete without some photo fun, right? So I set up what I like to refer to as a "Fauxtobooth". See, it is a little station where you can take your own photo with a remote control, much like a photo booth. But it's not a real booth - that is where the "Faux" part comes in. I know, cleaver, right? (I didn't come up with it. It's a term that has been used on the interweb for a while now.)

New Studio!

Exciting news! I recently signed a lease on a new studio space in downtown Toledo. My 7th floor space is large and urban and on a floor with a number of other artists' studios. Its in an old building on Jefferson that used to be the old Hotel Secor. I've been super busy getting the studio ready for clients, so I don't have any photos to share yet. However, I will be planning an "Open Studio" party when the work is complete. So check back for details.

Exciting News!

I have great news! One of my photographs has been accepted to the Toledo Area Artist Exhibition at the Toledo Museum of Art! For those of you who don't know, the Toledo Museum of Art is rated among the top museums in the US. So this is a great opportunity for me and I'm so excited to be accepted! Below is the information for the show.

The 91st Toledo Area Artist exhibit will be on display in the Canaday Gallery at the Toledo Museum of Art from July 10th - August 23, 2009. The awards ceremony and opening reception is on July 10th at 7:30 p.m. (cash bar opens at 6:30 p.m.).

Artist Trading Card Soiree

I recently had the opportunity to participate in my first Artist Trading Card event at the Space 237 gallery. It was fun experience. I met a lot of other artists and had the opportunity to see cards made from a number of techniques.

For those of you who don't know, an Artist Trading Card (ATC) is a small, collectible piece of art, 2.5" x 3.5". They are not to be sold but to be exchanged between artists. An ATC can be any medium and should include the artist's name, contact info, and title on the back of the card.

The theme of the soiree I attended was "Outer Space". Here are the images I came up with using photoshopped photos of lights and textures for my first edition of ATCs.

Artomatic 419 Opening

The opening at Artomatic 419 this past Saturday was amazing! So many people came out to see the large variety of visual, performance, and literary arts offered. The show was filled with a great creative energy that was truly inspiring.

My photography in the exhibit was well appreciated. I received some wonderful compliments and it was great to see so many friends and family were able to make it out to support my work. Tomorrow I will be heading to Chicago for a long weekend with two of my favorite gals. There will be fun, laughing, pizza, sushi, drinks, and photography. I'm really looking forward to the break.

I'm Back!

Howdy! I just wanted to post a quick message letting everyone know that I'm back from vacation and am working on getting caught up. The trip was relaxing and wonderful! I'll be sharing photos from my trip in the following weeks.

Out Of "The Office"

Tomorrow morning I will be heading out of town to stay in Traverse City, MI for a week. Traverse City is one of the prettiest places I've ever seen with my own two eyes. In addition to the white sand and blue water that attracts tourists like bees to honey, there are some great wineries and wonderful entertainment.

Clients: Please note that I will be away from email and phone for the entire week. I will return your messages when I return on Monday the 21st.

You many not know this, but travel photography is one my favorite things to do. It makes me feel as if I can bring a bit of my trip home with me. Since I can't take you with me, I thought I'd share some photos I took in Traverse City during my past visits. Enjoy!

My brother recently adopted a puppy and I had the opportunity to take some pics of her in my studio a couple of weeks ago. Meet 6 month old Penny. She is a mixed breed. Most likely a hound/lab mix. She is surprisingly calm for a pup and very food motivated. She made a great model as long as we had some food in our hands. Her little mopey face was so much fun to take photos of. We were giggling the whole time.

Session Fee - $75

No limit on clothes changes, or time. Local locations and studio shots are available. Sitting fee is due at the beginning of the photo session. Sales tax will be added to all listed prices on the invoice.

Payment for prints is due upon placement of the order. All prints are sold a la carte. This allows you to purchase only what you need. No limit on the number of poses. No prints you won't use.

Characters

This session was a lot of fun. The boys were such characters and I think it certainly shows through in the images. Here are a few of my favorites.

This was a totally unscripted moment. I had asked them to stand back to back, but the younger one wanted to show his affection for his big brother.

The younger boy had such fun with this prop I had laying around that he insisted having his picture taken with it at the end of the session. I love the satisfied expression on his face. LOL.

Yes, it's that time of year for small business owners - price adjustment time. I have adjusted my portrait pricing for 2008. There is a small bump in the prices for the small prints, but the good news is that I actually dropped the prices on the larger ones significantly. So with out further ado, here are the new prices.

These prices do not include senior portraits, fine art, or specialty photography. Please contact for quotes. Lorenzen Studios reserves the right to change pricing without notice.

Recently my friends had a baby boy, and in September I had the opportunity to take some photos of him. He is about 5 weeks old in these photos, and they were taken in their home. It was my first baby session for Lorenzen Studios, and it was such a great experience. These are some of my favorites from the shoot.

A Year In Review

Wow! Things have been getting busier for Lorenzen Studios in the last year. There has been a lot of new interest in my work and I'm happy to say that it feels very much like a new beginning. And it's off to a very exciting start. So here is a recap of the news in the last year:

Lorenzen Studios gets a studio! Late last year I finally acquired and set up an actual studio space. The studio is a extra space that I'm renting in my apartment building in downtown Toledo. It's nothing glamorous, but it's very spacious and meets my basic needs. I bought some great lights. I went with AlienBees. They are a great choice for someone who demands professional quality equipment at an affordable price. They are rugged and well built. And they are pink! (How great is that!?)

Lorenzen Studios has gone digital! In March of this year I purchased my very first digital SLR. I decided on the Nikon D200, and I couldn't be happier with my choice. I absolutely LOVE this camera! I have been having a blast exploring the wonderful world of digital photography. And I'm happy to report that I feel that it has helped me grow by leaps and bounds as a professional.

Lorenzen Studios is on Flickr! Early this year I began my affair with Flickr, and it has been love ever since. I have found it a fast and easy way to share my photography with the world without putting in all the hours to update my site (which is long overdue!) So when you are looking for my newest work, be sure to check out my Flickr page!

Lorenzen Studios interviewed! In June of this year I had the wonderful opportunity to be interviewed by writer Chris Schwarzkopf for AssociatedContent.com. I believe it was a mental turning point of sorts for me. I helped me reflect on the past, the hurdles I have overcome, and my goals for the future.

Lorenzen Studios at Artomatic 419 Lite! In mid September I had the honor to be included in a weekend long art exhibit known as Artomatic 419 Lite in downtown Toledo. I exhibited 9 photographs focusing on exploring the possibilities of several different digital photography techniques. The show was a wonderful opportunity and a great success. I'm looking forward to the next one!

Lorenzen Studios' portrait business is growing! Recently I have scored some wonderful new clients. Weekends are starting to fill up for the holiday season, so contact me if you are looking to book a portrait session!
